Why Your Reddit Video Download Has No Sound (And How to Fix It)

The technical reason

Reddit's video player uses DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP). Instead of one MP4, DASH splits a video into a video-only stream and an audio-only stream, then the player requests both and plays them in sync.

When a downloader grabs 'the video file', it usually grabs the video-only stream. The result plays fine but is completely silent — which is exactly the complaint you will find in thousands of Reddit threads.

The fix

You need a tool that downloads both streams and muxes them — that is, combines them into a single container. SSTikTok does this automatically: paste the Reddit post URL, click Download on the row marked Best quality, and the server fetches the video track and the audio track and merges them with FFmpeg before handing you the file.

Merging the two streams takes a few extra seconds, which is why many tools skip it.

Checking whether a file has audio

On desktop, open the file in VLC and check Tools → Codec Information. A stream labelled 'Audio' means you are fine. No audio stream means you got the video-only variant.

On macOS you can also select the file in Finder and press ⌘I — the 'More Info' panel sometimes reports audio channels. It is less reliable than VLC but faster.

What about Reddit GIFs?

Reddit 'GIFs' have been silent MP4 files for years. If you need an actual looping .gif for a forum or email signature, you will have to convert the MP4 afterwards — but be aware the file size will grow roughly tenfold.
